With these methods, conditions can often be treated through pinhole-sized incisions rather than large surgical cuts. 1. Varicose Vein Treatment (Venous Ablation)
Varicose veins are a common health issue characterised by enlarged and twisted veins, causing pain, swelling, and aesthetic concerns in the legs. Interventional radiology methods allow for effective treatment of varicose veins under local anaesthesia, without the need for surgery.
- Microwave Ablation: Uses high-frequency electromagnetic waves to heat and seal the inside of the varicose vein.
- Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA): A reliable method that uses radiofrequency energy to heat the vein wall and close off the varicose vein.
- Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA): Based on the principle of using laser energy to ablate and seal the inner surface of the varicose vein.
My Clinical Stance on Cyanoacrylate (Vein Glue) Method for Varicose Vein Treatment: We acknowledge that the cyanoacrylate (vein glue) method is widely used by many physicians today. However, in my own clinical practice, I choose not to use this method due to certain reported complication risks and long-term outcomes in the literature. For the benefit of our patients, we prioritise methods such as microwave, radiofrequency, or endovenous laser ablation (EVLA), for which there is more extensive and reliable long-term data. Our aim is always to provide the safest and most effective treatment.
2. Peripheral Artery Disease Treatment
In cases of narrowing or blockage of the arteries carrying blood to the legs, balloon angioplasty and stent placement procedures, guided by angiography, are used to restore vessel patency and blood flow.
3. Tumour Ablation Treatments
For certain tumours in organs such as the liver, kidney, lung, and bone, it is possible to destroy them without the need for surgery, using image-guided techniques such as thermal ablation (radiofrequency, microwave ablation) or freezing (cryoablation).
4. Embolisation Treatments
This is a method that treats diseases by blocking blood vessels in various conditions (such as fibroids, prostate enlargement, varicoceles, aneurysms, and for bleeding control).
- Uterine Fibroid Embolisation (UFE): Reducing the size of uterine fibroids, which are benign tumours in the uterus, by cutting off their blood supply.
- Prostate Artery Embolisation (PAE): Reducing the blood flow to the prostate in cases of benign prostate enlargement to alleviate symptoms.
- Varicocele Embolisation: Closing off varicose veins in the testes (varicocele).
5. Biopsy and Drainage Procedures
Taking accurate and safe diagnostic biopsies or draining fluid collections (abscesses, cysts) from the body using image guidance are also important application areas of interventional radiology.
