- Procedure Duration: Takes approximately 30-60 minutes. After the procedure, the patient can immediately get up and return to their daily activities.
- Recovery Time: Full recovery is usually achieved within a few days. Patients are advised to wear compression stockings for a certain period after the procedure.
2. Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)
- How it's Performed: Similar to EVLA, a catheter that emits radiofrequency energy is inserted into the varicose vein under ultrasound guidance. Controlled heat energy causes the vein to close.
- Advantages: Less pain and bruising due to homogeneous heat distribution to the vein wall, high efficacy, rapid recovery.
- Procedure Duration: Usually completed within 30-60 minutes. Performed under local anaesthesia.
- Recovery Time: Patients can return to their normal lives shortly after the procedure. Compression stocking use is recommended.
3. Microwave Ablation
- How it's Performed: Similar to laser and radiofrequency, microwave energy is used to close the varicose vein from within.
- Advantages: Controlled and effective heat distribution, offers a fast and comfortable treatment option.
- Procedure Duration: Completed quickly under local anaesthesia.
- Recovery Time: Fast, allowing a return to normal activities with minimal discomfort.
4. Foam Sclerotherapy
- How it's Performed: This method can be preferred especially for small and medium-sized varicose veins, superficial spider veins, or remnants of larger veins. A special medication (Polidocanol) is converted into a foam and injected directly into the varicose vein. This foam irritates the inner lining of the vein, causing it to close.
- Advantages: As it's administered by injection, it doesn't require surgical incisions, may not even require local anaesthesia, is effective for complex and tortuous veins, and can also be applied to varicose veins that have been previously treated but have recurred.
- Procedure Duration: Applied in short sessions. Wearing compression stockings and walking are recommended after the procedure.
- Recovery Time: The treated veins are gradually reabsorbed by the body over time. Full results can be seen within a few weeks.
5. Capillary Vein Laser Treatment (Transdermal Laser)
- How it's Performed: This is an externally applied laser treatment for thin, red or purple capillary veins on the legs. The laser beam penetrates the skin to the vein, causing it to close.
- Advantages: Does not require surgical incision or injection, yields aesthetically successful results.
- Procedure Duration: Generally painless or may involve a mild discomfort. Multiple sessions may be required.
- Recovery Time: Slight redness or swelling may be observed after the procedure. Sun protection is important.
Our Clinical Stance on Intravenous Adhesive (Cyanoacrylate) Method in Varicose Vein Treatment
We are aware that the intravenous adhesive (cyanoacrylate) method is widely used by many physicians in varicose vein treatment today. However, in my own clinical practice, I choose not to use this method due to some reported complication risks in the literature and the limited data currently available regarding its long-term outcomes. At our clinic, for our patients' long-term health and maximum benefit, we primarily prefer well-established methods with proven efficacy and clearer long-term results, such as microwave, radiofrequency, or endovenous laser ablation (EVLA). This preference is based on our principle of providing the safest and most effective treatment to our patients.
