Does Non-Surgical Varicose Vein Treatment Offer a Permanent Solution in Antalya?
Dear patients and interested readers,
I am Prof. Dr. Aykut Recep Aktaş. My specialisation is Interventional Radiology. Varicose veins are a significant problem affecting millions today, both aesthetically and in terms of health. At our clinic in Antalya, we offer our patients permanent and comfortable solutions using non-surgical varicose vein treatment methods provided by modern medical technologies.
So, are non-surgical varicose vein treatments truly permanent, and what options are available in Antalya?
The Permanence and Advantages of Non-Surgical Varicose Vein Treatments
Compared to traditional surgical methods, non-surgical varicose vein treatments stand out with their minimally invasive approaches. These methods are typically performed under local anaesthesia, through a small needle puncture, and offer numerous advantages:
- Permanence: When applied with correct diagnosis by an experienced interventional radiology specialist, non-surgical methods have very high success rates and provide a permanent solution for the treated veins. The risk of the treated vein reopening is extremely low.
- Painless and Comfortable Procedure: Procedures are generally painless or completed with very mild discomfort. Thanks to local anaesthesia, patients feel comfortable during the procedure.
- Rapid Recovery Process: Patients can often return to their daily activities on the same day. Hospitalisation is not required, which minimises disruption to work and social life.
- Aesthetic Results: As there are no large incisions, the aesthetic appearance is preserved, and the risk of scarring is negligible.
- Low Complication Risk: Compared to surgery, these methods carry lower risks of infection, bleeding, and anaesthesia-related complications.
Non-Surgical Varicose Vein Treatment Options Offered in Antalya
At our clinic in Antalya, we create personalised treatment plans based on the type, severity, and general health status of our patients' varicose veins, applying the most suitable and effective methods. We offer a wide range of solutions, from spider veins to severe venous insufficiency:
1. Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA) and Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)
These methods are considered the gold standard for treating large and incompetent veins. A thin catheter is inserted into the vein, and laser or radiofrequency energy is used to heat the vein wall, causing the vein to close. The closed vein is gradually absorbed by the body over time. These methods are known for their high success rates and long-term permanence.
2. Microwave Ablation
Similar to EVLA and RFA, this method is based on the principle of closing the vein internally using microwave energy. It can yield effective results, especially in thick and irregular vein structures.
3. Foam Sclerotherapy
This is particularly used for treating medium-sized varicose veins and venous insufficiency, or for treating residual side branches after large vein ablation. A special medication is mixed with air to form a foam and is injected directly into the varicose vein. The foam irritates the vein wall, causing the vein to close. It also yields successful results in the form of liquid sclerotherapy for spider veins.
4. Microphlebectomy
This procedure involves removing prominent, large varicose vein knots through very small incisions in the skin. It is performed under local anaesthesia and is usually applied in combination with other ablation methods.
I am aware that endovascular glue (cyanoacrylate) methods are widely used by many physicians in varicose vein treatment today. However, in my own clinical practice, I prefer not to use this method due to some potential complication risks and long-term outcomes reported in the literature. For the benefit and safety of my patients, I preferentially use proven and reliable methods such as microwave, radiofrequency, or endovenous laser ablation (EVLA) in my clinic.
Addressing Patient Concerns
One of our patients' biggest concerns is whether varicose veins will recur. The treated vein closes permanently. However, varicose veins can reappear in a different vein due to genetic predisposition, lifestyle, and other factors. Therefore, regular follow-up and lifestyle changes (regular exercise, weight control, avoiding prolonged standing) are important.
At our clinic in Antalya, by utilising the most current and scientific methods in varicose vein treatment, we not only alleviate our patients' complaints but also offer permanent solutions that enhance their quality of life. Remember that consulting an experienced interventional radiology specialist for accurate diagnosis and a treatment plan is of critical importance.
